The Drosophila Anaesthetizer kit allows classes to handle Drosophila without the need for ether.
This kit includes CO2 releasing tablets that temporarily knock out the Drosophila and cool packs to keep them immobilised.
The CO2 released by the tablet will anaesthetize the flies for no more than a few minutes.
The cold pack will keep them immobilized for an hour without adverse effects.
The tablet is added to a vial with water and the CO2 collected, then by means of the tube directed into the vial with the flies between a foam plug and the wall of the vial.
Once they are anaesthetized they can be placed in a petri dish with filter paper which should be sitting on the ice pack.
