P. chrysogenum is a common fungus that can inhabit a wide variety of habitats from the soils of degraded forests to the Arctic sub-glacial ice, however it is most commonly found in indoor environments, especially in damp or water-damaged buildings.
This species can also be found on fruit causing decay. It was previously known as Penicillium notatum.
Typically blue to blue-green, it sometimes exudes a yellow pigment.
Penicillium was originally discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928.
It is the source of several antibiotics, most significantly penicillin.
P. chrysogenum has been used industrially to produce penicillin and xanthocillin X, to treat pulp mill waste and to produce various enzymes.
It can also play a role as either a pathogen or an allergen, and may aid in protecting crops from certain pathogenic attacks.
It has rarely been reported as a cause of human disease.
